Title: Euphemism in a War Letter
Task: Write a postcard home to a family member/sweetheart from the perspective of a soldier fighting in Flanders in WWI.

  1. Write one version describing the full horror of what you’ve seen and done and what has happened to you and your friends
  2. Identify the horrible truth – those phrases that will make your loved one horrified
  3. Rewrite your postcard using euphemism to hide the truth from your loved ones


  • Two versions must be written
  • Two paragraphs
  • Use of personal pronouns and correct perspective – “I” and “you”
